JAPAN V SPAIN - OLYMPIC FOOTBALL MEN'S FOOTBALL QUARTER-FINAL - LIVE

UPDATED 02/08/2024 AT 15:18 GMT
A shock defeat to Egypt in their final group match means Spain will face Japan in a mouthwatering quarter-final match in the Paris 2024 Olympic football tournament. The Japanese cruised through their group with three wins from three without conceding a goal but face a tough task against one of the pre-tournament favourites.

14' SPAIN HAVE CONFIDENCE
Spain could have made it two just seconds later with Lopez looking for a second.
This left side looks to be where it's all happening for Spain and Japan are left a little stunned after that early goal.

SPAIN STUNNED BY EGYPT AT PARIS 2024 - AS IT HAPPENED

11' GOAL SPAIN 1 - 0 JAPAN
A sensational strike from outside the box which sees Fermin Lopez put Spain ahead in the early stages.
It's the first shot on goal and it goes in. But questions could be raised whether Japan's goalkeeper Leobrian Kokubo shoud have done more.
8' GOOD INTENSITY SO FAR
There's been a good intensity so far, with both sides having a spare of possession. Spain look like they could be a real threat on the front foot but they haven't been a stranger to a loose ball. Japan looking capable so far.
5' FREE-KICK TO SPAIN
In Spain's first move forward in this game, Aimar Oroz is brought down. The resulting free-kick is played short but is easily cleared for the first corner of the game.
4' MAN IN THE MIDDLE
Today we’ve got Mauritius referee Dahane Beida overseeing things for this quarter final clash and he’s been no stranger to a yellow card at these games.
Having overseen Spain’s first match of the tournament against Uzbekistan, he handed out eight yellow cards, with five of them for the Spanish contingent. It was a slightly quieter affair during Ukraine vs Argentina where only two yellow cards were issued.
Most notably, Beida was chosen to officiate the African Cup on Nations final in 2023 where hosts Ivory Coast came from behind to defeat Nigeria 2-1 to secure their third AFCON title.
2' EARLY YELLOW CARD
Japan get the ball forward but their player is pulled back and Spain's Eric Garcia picks up an early yellow card
1' KICK-OFF!

15:58 LET'S HAVE A REMINDER OF THE TEAMSHEET
Japan: Kokubo; Ohata, Kimura, Takai, Sekine; Fujita; Mito, Yamamoto; Saito, Hosoya, Yamada
Spain: Tenas; Miranda, Cubarsi, Garcia, Pubill; Baena, Barrios; Gomez, Lopez, Oroz; Ruiz
15:54 IT’S TIME FOR THE NATIONAL ANTHEMS
We're just minutes away from kick-off.
15:52 DISCOVERY+ IS LIVE!
Here’s a quick reminder that discovery+ is the home of the Olympics with plenty of sports to get stuck into. There's been plenty of medals already given out today and plenty more still to come.
Today is also the first day of the athletics, so don’t forget to tune in tonight when Team GB’s hopeful Keely Hodgkinson looks to progress in the women’s 800m at 6.45pm BST.
15:47 NEW GENERATION OF STARS
These are very young squads for both nations but with players amongst the ranks of the likes of Paris Saint Germain, FC Barcelona, Atletico de Madrid for Spain, we’re likely to be witnessing a new generation of stars.
Despite the oldest player in La Roja’s ranks being 24-years-old, we’re looking at players who have over 1,000 appearances at the top level with appearances also in the UEFA Champions League.

Japan were also unable to secure their big names for the tournament too, with the likes of Real Sociedad’s Takefusa Kubo and Liverpool’s Endo Wataru unable to get permission from their clubs, so there will be plenty of chances for stars to etch their names into history and put themselves on the big stage.
With an average age of 22-years-old, there is still plenty of experience within this side from playing in the top tier of the Japanese football league.
15:42 IS IT ALL OVER FOR THE USA?
Although you never know with Olympic football, with 20 minutes to go, it all looks to be decided in the 2pm quarter final match between Morocco and the United States.
Achraf Hakimi has made it three as his side takes a comfortable lead. You can follow the LIVE coverage here.
15:37 SHALL WE HAVE A LOOK AT THE LAST TIME THESE TEAMS PLAYED EACH OTHER AT THE OLYMPICS?
The Tokyo 2020 games saw many countries bring a host of big names to the Olympic stage and Spain and Japan were no stranger to that.
Japan’s side included the likes of Maya Yoshida, Wataru Endo and Takefusa Kubo all take their place on the field, whilst Spain had the likes of Unai Simon, Marc Cucurella, Pau Torres, Pedri, and Dani Olmo to name a few.
Whilst their semi-final at the Saitama Stadium proved a close encounter for the 90 minutes, it was Spain’s Marco Asensio who broke the deadlock in the 115th minute with a beauty of the ball to curve around the goalkeeper and find the bottom corner. Spain would go on to lose in the final as Brazil defended their title with a 2-1 victory, after a rather dramatic 121st minute winner.
15:32 FORM AHEAD OF THE GAME
Go Oiwa’s Japan has shown impressive form and come into this match unbeaten, having topped Group D. There was no slow start to the tournament with Japan dominating Paraguay in their first game with a 5-0 victory (goals coming from Rihito Yamamoto, Shunsuke Mito and substitute Shota Fujio). Wins against Mali (1-0) and Israel (1-0) secured their place in the quarter final for the fifth time in their history – having missed out on a medal in their home Olympics in 2020.
It's also familiar territory for Spain, who reach their sixth quarter final at the games, having won the tournament at Barcelona 1992 and coming runners-up in Sydney 2000 and Tokyo 2020, which was their first appearance since London 2012.
Spain will be looking to go one step further after they were beaten 2-1 in extra time by Brazil in the final at Tokyo 2020 but will be hoping to shake off a surprise 2-1 defeat against Egypt in their last group match. Before that, things were going swimmingly for Santi Denia’s side, who overcame Uzbekistan 2-1 and Dominican Republic 3-1 in Group C.
15:28 CHANGES TO THE LINE-UP
There's been a massive shake-up for both sides it seems, with both nations resting players ahead of this crucial head-to-head.
I make that SEVEN changes for Japan, with a formation change of 4-1-2-3 and a strong indication that Go Oiwa is playing to go on the offense despite their strong opponents.
Spain make NINE changes from the side which surprisingly lost to Egypt in their final group game, with only two survivors from that game.
15:20 LET'S HAVE A LOOK AT THE TEAMS
Japan: Kokubo; Ohata, Kimura, Takai, Sekine; Fujita; Mito, Yamamoto; Saito, Hosoya, Yamada
Spain: Tenas; Miranda, Cubarsi, Garcia, Pubill; Baena, Barrios; Gomez, Lopez, Oroz; Ruiz
15:15 HELLO AND WELCOME
Welcome to LIVE coverage of the second quarter final match of the Olympic men’s football tournament.
We should be in for a cracker this afternoon at the Groupama Stadium in Lyon, as Japan take on Spain with a chance to seal a place in the semi-final and their opponents will be the winner of Morocco vs the United States on Monday, August 5 at 18:00.
